- Was the 25L6, Developed Alongside the 6L6, a Descendant of the 2A3?

6W6 Average Plate Characteristics

12CU6 Average Plate Characteristics

12CU6 vs 6W6 Average Plate Characteristics

  • Screen Grid

Was the 25L6, Developed Alongside the 6L6, a Descendant of the 2A3?

Anyone who has spent some time in the world of tube audio has probably heard of the legendary 300B and 2A3.

But let me ask you an interesting question.

Could the 25L6, introduced by RCA in 1936, still carry the "genetic heritage" of the 2A3 that RCA had developed three years earlier, in 1933?

Of course, this is not a claim found in any history book. However, when we begin tracing the characteristic curves of vacuum tubes, some surprisingly intriguing clues start to emerge.

This article is the first installment of J-Album's Tube Genealogy Project, an attempt to follow those clues.

Note: Throughout this article, terms such as gene, descendant, and lineage are used metaphorically. They refer to continuity in electrical characteristics and design philosophy, not documented historical ancestry.

Many experienced tube enthusiasts know the 25L6, but for most audio hobbyists it remains a rather unfamiliar tube.

RCA introduced the 25L6 in November 1936, only four months after releasing the now-famous 6L6 beam power tube.

To be honest, I never paid much attention to the 25L6 myself.

The 6L6 had already established itself as an excellent power tube, while the 6V6 offered outstanding performance at a lower cost. With so many excellent tubes already available, I simply couldn't find a compelling reason to explore a tube like the 25L6, whose output power was somewhere in between.

Then one day, I happened to come across a single graph.

That graph completely changed the way I looked at the 25L6.

Figure 1. Comparison of Triode-Connected Characteristics: 2A3 vs. 6W6

Figure 1 overlays the plate characteristic curves of the 2A3 (U1) and the 6W6 (U2) connected as triodes. Although their absolute bias voltages differ, the overall shapes of the characteristic curves are remarkably similar. J-Album considers this similarity to be an important clue suggesting continuity in design philosophy.

The first time I saw this graph, I was genuinely surprised.

"Can they really be this similar?"

The characteristic curves of these two tubes looked astonishingly alike.

They are certainly not identical.

The 2A3 uses grid bias steps of 20 volts, whereas the 6W6 uses 12.8-volt intervals. Consequently, their amplification factors (μ) are different.

However, the important point here is not the absolute voltage values—it is the shape of the characteristic curves.

Like two brothers with the same face but different heights, these tubes exhibit remarkably similar operating characteristics.

At this point, some readers may wonder:

"Why are we suddenly talking about the 6W6 when this article is about the 25L6?"

The answer is simple.

The 6W6 is essentially the same tube as the 25L6, differing only in heater voltage.

The first number in most American tube designations indicates the heater voltage.

The 25L6 uses a 25-volt heater.

Later, RCA produced an equivalent version with a 6.3-volt heater. According to their naming convention, it should have been called 6L6.

However, that designation had already been assigned to another tube.

As a result, RCA introduced it under a new designation: 6W6.

In other words, the 25L6 and the 6W6 are essentially identical tubes except for their heater voltage.

Now let's return to our original question.

If a triode-connected 6W6 behaves so much like a 2A3, could the 25L6 also possess characteristics reminiscent of the 2A3?

That was the moment when a hypothesis began to form in my mind.

Could the 25L6 actually carry some of the "genetic traits" of the 2A3?

Of course, no historical document makes such a claim.

Yet the history of vacuum tubes cannot always be understood through documents alone.

Sometimes, characteristic curves reveal more about a designer's thinking than written records ever could.

However, there was still one missing link connecting the 6W6 to the 2A3.

That missing link turned out to be the 12CU6.

In a previous study, I demonstrated that the 12CU6, when triode-connected, exhibits operating characteristics remarkably similar to those of the 2A3.

The complete discussion can be found in the YouTube presentation linked below.

If the 12CU6 and the 6W6 are themselves electrically very similar tubes,

then we have

12CU6 → 2A3

and

12CU6 → 6W6 (25L6)

which naturally suggests that the 25L6 may also have inherited part of the electrical "DNA" of the 2A3.

Is that really the case?

Let's examine the evidence.

The following graphs compare the plate characteristics of the 6W6 (25L6) and the 12CU6.

Unlike the previous comparison, these graphs show the tubes operating in their original pentode mode, not triode-connected.

Because the characteristics of a pentode vary significantly with screen grid (Grid No.2) voltage, both tubes must be compared under identical screen grid conditions.

The published datasheets specify 125V for the 6W6 and 150V for the 12CU6, making direct comparison difficult.

Therefore, I recalculated the 6W6 characteristics for 150V screen voltage, allowing both tubes to be evaluated under identical conditions.

6W6 Average Plate Characteristics

12CU6 Average Plate Characteristics

Viewing the curves separately makes comparison difficult, so I overlaid them into a single graph.

12CU6 vs 6W6 Average Plate Characteristics

The blue curves represent the 12CU6, while the red curves represent the 6W6.

The 0V and -5V grid curves almost perfectly overlap, while slight differences begin to appear at deeper bias voltages.

This behavior closely resembles what we observed earlier between the 2A3 and the 6W6 in triode connection.

In other words, the overall shape of the characteristic curves remains extremely similar, with only moderate differences in amplification factor.

Other electrical specifications also show remarkable similarity.

  • Maximum Plate Dissipation: 10W for both tubes
  • Screen Grid Dissipation: Nearly identical
  • Transconductance (gm): Very similar
  • Internal Plate Resistance (rp): Nearly identical around the operating point

Considering both the recalculated 150V characteristics and normal manufacturing tolerances, I personally estimate the similarity between these two tubes to exceed 90%.

This strongly suggests that their internal electrode structures share a very similar fundamental design.

From this perspective, I believe the 6W6 and the 12CU6 are extremely closely related designs.

During the transition from the triode era to the beam power tube era, RCA introduced the revolutionary 6L6.

(Beam power tubes were developed by RCA as an alternative to Philips' pentode patents.)

At nearly the same time, RCA also released the 25L6.

There is no historical documentation stating that the 25L6 was derived from the 2A3.

However, after comparing the electrical characteristics of the 2A3, 12CU6, and 6W6 (25L6), I believe there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the 25L6 inherited part of the design philosophy and electrical characteristics of the 2A3.

This is the first hypothesis presented in J-Album's Tube Genealogy Project:

The 25L6 may well carry the genetic heritage of the legendary 2A3.
