The Birth of J-Album: Into the Joyful Resonance of Warm Analog

제이앨범의 슬로건은 "따뜻한 아날로그의 즐거운 감동속으로 ..." 입니다. 그러한 생각으로 제이앨범은 2012년 10월7일 창립되었습니다. (브라질 시간  2012년 10월7일 일요일 오전 9시 삐라시까바 싼티아고 76호 숙소 창문옆 책상에서...)

당시 브라질에서 장기간 출장중이었고 숙소에서 가져온 6V6앰프를 6LR8로 개조하면서 공부를 하였습니다.그러던 중 개인적으로 운영해 왔던 홈페이지를 오디오 까페형식으로 공개하기로 하였습니다.

제이앨범의 초심은

진공관 오디오를 시작하시는 분들이 좋은 앰프를 쉽게 자작을 하실 수 있게 돕는 것입니다.그러나 한편으로 오래 자작을 하다 보면 평생 소장할 나만의 앰프를 만들고 싶어집니다. 그런 앰프를 위해서는 물량을 아끼지 않고 최고를 추구하게 됩니다. 어쩌면 그런 것이 무의미한 사치일 수 있습니다. 저 역시 소리만 좋으면 그만이지 스펙이상의 부품투입이나 외관에 많은 투자를 하는 것은 낭비라고 생각했습니다. 지금까지 자작해 온 앰프들이 몇대가 있지만 종종 진공관 오디오를 처음 접하시는 분들이 한번씩 보러오시면 실망을 하시는 것같았고 저희 가족까지도 늘 작업실에서 뭘한다고 하면서 그럴 듯한 앰프하나 못만든다며 농담삼아 이야기 하곤 하는데 내심 마음에 걸리곤 했습니다. 그래서 최근에 생각한 것은 결국 오디오의 종착점은 디자인일 거라는 생각을 하게 되었습니다.

제이앨범은 앞으로 두가지를 추구하려고 합니다.

1. 소박하지만 결코 음질에 있어선 소박하지 않는 가성비가 뛰어난 오디오의 자작.

2. 음질도 뛰어나면서 실망감을 주지 않는 누구나 소장하고 싶어지는 오디오 디자인.

어떻게 보면 두마리의 토끼를 잡겠다는 욕심같아 보입니다. 그렇지만 이 두가지의 목표는 동시성이 아니라 순차적이라고 본다면 가능한 목표입니다.

처음 시작하면서 두번째 목표를 이룰 수는 없습니다. 처음엔 소박한 앰프와 기기들을 많이 자작하면서 경험을 쌓아야 합니다. 기기의 디자인이란 그냥 보기 좋다고 되는 것이 아니라 성능을 감안한 디자인이어야 가치가 있습니다. 결국 하나의 목표로 정리할 수 있는데요

결국 최고를 만들겠다는  자작을 하는 사람이라면 누구나 추구하는 목표입니다.

With this vision, J-Album was founded on October 7, 2012.

The journey began in a modest room in Piracicaba, Brazil. During a long-term business trip, I spent my Sundays at a small desk by the window, immersed in studying vacuum tube circuits. My main project at the time was modifying a 6V6 amplifier into a 6LR8 version. It was during those quiet hours of engineering that I decided to transform my private archives into an open community for audio enthusiasts.

My Special Affection for the 6V6

The 6V6 is a vacuum tube for which I hold a deep, personal affection. Originally designed by RCA as a "rational downgrade" of the 6L6, it was optimized for the home environment rather than massive theaters. While the 6L6 was a high-output powerhouse, the 6V6 was a masterpiece of efficiency and tonal warmth. Many enthusiasts, including myself, find its "thicker" sound signature even more charming than its larger predecessor. My fascination with the 6V6—and its cousin, the 6LR8—was the very spark that ignited the creation of J-Album.

The Two Pillars of J-Album

Since that day in Brazil, J-Album has pursued two distinct paths:

Humble yet High-Performance DIY: Creating cost-effective audio that is modest in appearance but never compromises on sound quality.

Exquisite Audio Design: Crafting amplifiers that deliver both superior sound and a stunning aesthetic that anyone would be proud to own.

I believe these goals are sequential. One must build many humble, experimental devices to gain the experience necessary to create a design where "form follows function."

The Ultimate Mission

It all converges into a single goal: "Crafting Vacuum Tube Audio with the Ultimate Sound and Ultimate Design." This is the peak that every true DIY builder dreams of reaching. J-Album is committed to that journey, and I invite you to join us as we explore the timeless warmth of analog sound.
