The Beginning of Vacuum Tubes — And What We May Be Overlooking

And a simple metal plate placed nearby almost as an afterthought.
Few people could have imagined that this seemingly insignificant arrangement would become the starting point of modern electronics.
What Edison Saw—But Didn't Pursue
While developing the incandescent light bulb, Thomas Edison noticed a curious phenomenon.
Something appeared to leave the hot filament, travel through the vacuum inside the bulb, and reach the nearby metal plate.
Today, we know this phenomenon as thermionic emission, also known as the Edison Effect.
At the time, however, Edison did not consider it particularly important.
He was, above all, an inventor and entrepreneur. His attention was naturally focused on a practical question:
"Can this make money?"

Over time, these have come to be treated almost as the only correct choices.
The result?
Production disappeared.
Supplies dwindled.
Prices climbed ever higher.
Eventually, people began saying:
"Vacuum tubes are simply too expensive."
"They're a hobby for only a select few."
As years passed, genuine understanding of vacuum tubes gradually faded, while their mythology continued to grow.
The World of Vacuum Tubes Is Much Larger
Perhaps it's time to ask ourselves an important question.
Can the entire world of vacuum tubes really be represented by only a few famous model numbers?
The answer is clearly no.
Throughout the history of vacuum tube development, thousands of different tubes were created.
Many of them disappeared not because they were inferior, but simply because they were less well known.
Take the 6CB5, for example.
It wasn't designed for audio at all.
It was built for television horizontal deflection circuits, where it had to operate quickly and handle substantial power.
But reconnect it as a triode, and an entirely different personality emerges.
It is much like discovering that a machine designed for one purpose possesses unexpected talents in another environment.
The results can be surprisingly musical.
In some applications, it performs in a range remarkably similar to classic tubes such as the 300B or 2A3 while offering its own unique character.
What We May Be Missing
Edison witnessed an extraordinary phenomenon but failed to recognize its true significance.
Today, we may be making a similar mistake.
Instead of exploring the vast landscape of vacuum tubes, we continue focusing on only a handful of famous models.
Yet the essence of a vacuum tube is not its model number.
Its true nature lies in the interaction between electrons and electric fields.
That physics is universal.
It is not exclusive to a few celebrated tubes.
Rediscovering the Possibilities
Imagine what could happen if more enthusiasts embraced this perspective.
Rather than competing for a small number of increasingly expensive tubes, people would begin exploring countless overlooked alternatives.
The benefits would be obvious:
- More choices
- Lower costs
- Greater sonic diversity
Perhaps even the prices of newly manufactured tubes would begin moving in a healthier direction as demand became more evenly distributed.
History Has a Way of Repeating Itself
The strange phenomenon Edison casually observed eventually transformed the technological world.
Today, we face another choice.
Will we continue treating only a few tubes as untouchable legends?
Or will we seek to understand the entire world of vacuum tubes?
Vacuum tube technology is not merely an artifact of the past.
In many ways, it remains a technology that has yet to be fully explored.
