Where Did Beam Power Tubes Go After the 6550 and KT88?

  • EL = 6.3V
  • XL = 13.3V
  • LL = 18V
  • PL = 27V

따라서

EL500 = 6.3V

XL500 = 13.3V

LL500 = 18V

PL500 = 27V

13GB5 = XL500 = 18GB5 = LL500 = 27GB5 = PL500

“6DQ5 is a big brother of 6BQ6, about 2-3 times bigger and stronger!”

CATHODE CURRENT

Peak: 1100 mA max.

Average: 315 mA max.

“Types 13GB5/XL500, 18GB5/LL500 and 27GB5/PL500 are identical with type 6GB5/EL500 except for heater ratings.”

Beam Power Tube

이에 등장한 것이 EL509/PL509입니다.

Where Did Beam Power Tubes Go After the 6550 and KT88?

Another Evolution: The PL500

A vacuum tube called the 13GB5 was introduced to me by someone known as KDK when I first started J-Album.

He described it as a tube that was “not inferior to the 300B.”

At the time, however, I was interested in a small output tube called the 6LQ8, so I did not pay much attention to the 13GB5.

Years later, while tracing the lineage of the 6CB5, I encountered the 13GB5 again.

I discovered that the 13GB5 was actually the American designation for the European XL500.

This tube was first developed in Europe by the Philips/Mullard group.

There is an interesting feature in the European tube numbering system. The first two letters indicate the heater characteristics.

For example:

  • EL = 6.3 V

  • XL = 13.3 V

  • LL = 18 V

  • PL = 27 V

Thus:

EL500 = 6.3 V heater

XL500 = 13.3 V heater

LL500 = 18 V heater

PL500 = 27 V heater

These tubes are essentially the same electrical design, with the heater ratings being the major difference. The 6GB5/EL500 family includes the XL500/13GB5, LL500/18GB5, and PL500/27GB5 variants.

So the 13GB5 that I had once overlooked was actually part of one of the most interesting families of late vacuum-tube development.

From the 6CB5 to the 6DQ5

Earlier, I discussed the following lineage:

807 → 6BG6G → 6BQ6 (6CU6) → 6CD6G → 6CB5

While following this lineage, another remarkable tube appeared:

6DQ5.

There is an interesting description of the 6DQ5 in discussions among tube enthusiasts:

“6DQ5 is a big brother of 6BQ6, about 2–3 times bigger and stronger!”

Looking at the chronology and the physical scale of these tubes, the following progression appears quite convincing:

807 → 6BG6G → 6BQ6 (6CU6) → 6CD6G → 6CB5 → 6DQ5

However, the 6DQ5 has a somewhat different character from the 6CD6G and 6CB5.

The 6DQ5 — A Monster of Peak Current

The 6DQ5 sacrificed some linearity in pursuit of something else:

enormous instantaneous current.

Its data sheet gives the following cathode-current ratings:

CATHODE CURRENT

Peak: 1100 mA max.

Average: 315 mA max.

That is 1.1 amperes of peak cathode current.

Among vacuum tubes, this is an extraordinary number.

Peak cathode current is often regarded as one of the most useful indicators of the class or capability of a TV horizontal-output tube. There are only a handful of tubes in the history of vacuum tubes capable of exceeding 1,100 mA.

The 6DQ5 is therefore truly a monster tube.

But this enormous current capability came at a price.

The control grid, G1, was positioned extremely close to the cathode. This allowed the tube to control a very large electron current, but it also exposed the grid to intense cathode heat.

That could cause thermionic emission from the grid itself and thermal deformation of the grid structure.

Furthermore, thicker grid wires were required to withstand the heat. This reduced the precision of the grid structure and contributed to the reduction in linearity.

In other words:

The 6DQ5 traded some linearity for extreme current capability.

For this reason, some enthusiasts regard the 6DQ5 as belonging to another branch of the 6BQ5-related lineage rather than simply treating it as a straightforward continuation of the 6CD6G and 6CB5.

This distinction is important.

It is not a lineage explicitly established in an official manufacturer's document. Rather, it is an interpretation that has become widely accepted through discussions among tube builders and enthusiasts in communities such as diyAudio.

Thus, we can represent the lineage approximately as:

807 → 6BG6G → 6BQ6 (6CU6) → 6CD6G → 6CB5

                └────────────→ 6DQ5

The 6CB5 was introduced by RCA in 1955, while the 6DQ5 appeared later, around 1958.

At this point, we can already see an important pattern in the evolution of vacuum tubes.

They were not simply receiving new model numbers.

They were being redesigned to meet increasingly demanding requirements:

higher voltage → higher current → higher peak current → greater pulse-power capability.

Back to Europe — The 500 Series

Now let us return to Europe.

One of the most important tubes in this story is the PL500.

The PL500 belongs to the same family as the EL500, XL500 and LL500, with different heater ratings. The EL500/6GB5 family and its heater variants are documented as equivalent designs.

The PL500 appeared around 1960, developed by the Philips/Mullard group.

Chronologically, this places it a few years after the 6DQ5.

The PL500 data sheet contains a particularly interesting statement:

“Types 13GB5/XL500, 18GB5/LL500 and 27GB5/PL500 are identical with type 6GB5/EL500 except for heater ratings.”

In other words, although these tubes carry different type numbers, they are essentially the same tube with different heater specifications.

The PL500 was designed specifically as a television line-output tube, and it was intended to replace the earlier PL36.

The Cavitrap — A Remarkable Anode Structure

The most fascinating aspect of the PL500 is its Cavitrap anode.

The PL500 was not simply a larger tube designed to handle more current.

Its anode was redesigned to control the behavior of secondary electrons.

Inside the tube, the electron beam reaches a specially constructed anode containing partitions that form cavities.

These cavities capture secondary electrons emitted from the anode instead of allowing them to return toward the screen grid.

This greatly improves the ratio of anode current to screen-grid current.

That is the principle behind the name Cavitrap.

Mullard's own technical description explains that the partitions of the Cavitrap anode recapture secondary-emission electrons and thereby reduce screen-grid current.

This was an important improvement because the PL500 had to deliver greater deflection energy for more demanding television standards.

In fact, compared with the PL36, the PL500 could deliver approximately 40% greater deflection energy under the same practical conditions.

A Small Tube with Enormous Current Capability

The PL500 has a relatively modest plate dissipation of around 12 W.

Yet its peak anode current can reach roughly 420–440 mA, depending on the specification.

That is a remarkable amount of current for such a relatively small tube.

If a PL500 had been physically enlarged to the class of the 6DQ5 while retaining its electrical design principles, its potential peak current capability would have been enormous.

The PL500 also has an exceptionally low internal plate resistance and very high transconductance.

This reflects the same fundamental direction we saw in the 6DQ5:

bringing the control grid close to the cathode and creating a highly efficient electron-flow structure.

But the PL500 takes this concept further.

The 6DQ5 pursued extreme current capability.

The PL500 combined high current capability with a sophisticated electron-beam and secondary-electron management system.

In that sense, the PL500 represents a remarkable refinement of the beam-power-tube concept.

The 6DQ5 and PL500 — Two Paths, One Destination

Here we encounter something particularly interesting.

In America, one branch developed through:

807 → 6BG6G → 6BQ6 → 6CD6G → 6CB5 → 6DQ5

Meanwhile, Europe developed another branch:

PL81 → PL36 → PL500

and eventually:

PL500 → PL504 → PL509 → PL519

These should not necessarily be interpreted as one simple direct bloodline.

Rather, they represent different branches responding to similar engineering problems.

The common foundation was the beam power tube.

The new challenge was the television horizontal-sweep circuit, which demanded:

  • extremely high peak current

  • high peak voltage

  • rapid switching

  • high pulse power

  • and efficient electron control

Different manufacturers and different regions arrived at increasingly similar solutions because they were solving essentially the same engineering problem.

This is one of the things I find most fascinating about the history of vacuum tubes.

It is not simply a history of tube numbers.

It is a history of how engineering requirements changed the physical structure of the electron tube.

The 500 Series Did Not End with the PL500

There is one correction I should make to the earlier discussion.

The PL500 was not actually the final member of the 500 series.

The fundamental design remained, but the ratings and physical construction continued to improve.

The progression can be summarized as:

EL500 / PL500

EL504 / PL504

EL509 / PL509

EL519 / PL519

The later tubes were progressively strengthened to cope with the increasing demands of television, especially as color television became widespread.

The development followed a familiar pattern:

larger screens → greater deflection energy → greater peak current → greater thermal stress.

PL504 — The Improved 500 Series

The early EL500/PL500 generation faced thermal limitations when operated under demanding conditions.

The next stage was the EL504/PL504.

The basic concept remained intact, but the tube was strengthened to provide greater thermal and electrical margins.

The evolution was therefore not a complete redesign.

It was the refinement of an already successful architecture.

EL509 / PL509 — The Monster of the Color-TV Era

By the late 1960s, color television was becoming widespread.

The power requirements increased, and another generation of horizontal-output tubes was required.

This led to the EL509/PL509.

The tube became physically larger and was capable of handling substantially greater power.

With plate dissipation in the range of roughly 30 W or more, the EL509/PL509 represented a dramatic increase in physical and electrical capability compared with the original PL500.

And something interesting happened.

A tube originally designed for television found its way back into the world of audio.

Its low internal resistance and high-current capability made it attractive for certain high-power audio applications, particularly OTL (Output Transformer-Less) amplifiers.

An OTL amplifier eliminates the output transformer between the tubes and the loudspeaker.

To do that successfully, the output stage needs tubes capable of delivering large currents with relatively low internal resistance.

The EL509/PL509 was well suited to this requirement.

Thus, a tube developed for television horizontal deflection returned once again to the world of audio.

EL519 / PL519 — The Last Flame of the Vacuum-Tube Era

And then came the EL519 / PL519.

This tube represents one of the final stages in the evolution of the 500 series.

By the early 1970s, television circuits were placing enormous demands on horizontal-output tubes.

Large transient currents occurred when the set was switched on, when channels were changed, and whenever the horizontal-deflection system responded to rapidly changing operating conditions.

The manufacturers continued to improve the electrode materials, thermal design and current-handling capability.

The result was a tube capable of handling extraordinarily large peak currents.

Figures approaching 1.2 A of peak cathode current are associated with the PL519 family.

This is an astonishing figure when we remember that we are talking about a vacuum tube.

But there is something deeply ironic about the timing.

The PL519 was being developed at a time when transistors were already replacing vacuum tubes throughout the electronics industry.

And yet, at almost the very moment the vacuum-tube era was coming to an end, tube engineers were pushing the technology toward some of its most extreme levels of performance.

In that sense, the PL519 feels like:

the last flame of the vacuum-tube era.

Looking Back at the Entire Lineage

Let us now put the major branches together.

One American branch developed through:

807

6BG6G

6BQ6

6CD6G

6CB5

6550

KT88

And from this general family of high-power beam tubes, the enormous 6DQ5 emerged as another important branch.

Meanwhile, the European television branch developed through:

PL81

PL36

PL500

PL504

PL509

PL519

At first glance these tubes appear unrelated.

But when we look at them as part of the history of beam-power-tube engineering, a much larger picture emerges.

The same fundamental technology was being pushed in different directions.

In audio:

6L6 → 6550 → KT88

In television:

6BQ6 → 6CD6 → 6CB5 → 6DQ5

and in Europe:

PL81 → PL36 → PL500 → PL504 → PL509 → PL519

This is why I believe that the history of the beam power tube did not end with the 6550 or KT88.

It simply continued somewhere else.

So, Where Did Beam Power Tubes Go After the 6550 and KT88?

Now we can finally return to the question at the beginning.

Did the evolution of the beam power tube end with the 6550 and KT88?

No.

For audio enthusiasts, the 6550 and KT88 may appear to represent the ultimate development of the beam power output tube.

But at almost exactly the same time, an entirely different evolutionary path was taking place inside television receivers.

There, beam power tubes were evolving toward:

lower internal resistance,

higher transconductance,

greater peak current,

higher pulse-power capability,

and increasingly sophisticated control of the electron beam.

At the end of that path stood the PL500 and its successors.

The PL500 was followed by the PL504, PL509 and finally the PL519, but the basic architecture of the 500 series had already reached a remarkably mature form.

In that sense, the PL500 represents one of the great milestones in the final chapter of classical vacuum-tube development.

The Final Generation of the Vacuum Tube Era

Of course, vacuum tubes did not disappear completely after the PL519.

New high-power audio tubes continued to appear much later:

KT90 / KT100 — 1990s

KT120 — 2010

KT150 — 2013

KT170 — 2020

However, I would regard these primarily as modern-production tubes, rather than as part of the classical vacuum-tube history that began in the 1930s.

From that historical perspective, the PL500 and its descendants — the 504, 509 and 519 families — can be regarded as one of the final chapters of the classical vacuum-tube era.

And here we encounter one more fascinating connection.

When some of these 500-series tubes are connected in triode mode and operated in parallel, their characteristics can approach those of the familiar 300B in certain operating regions.

The PL500 is certainly not a 300B.

Nor should these tubes be regarded as direct descendants of the 300B.

But this similarity brings us back to the question that has followed me throughout this research.

Back to the 2A3 and 300B

Where does the gene of the vacuum tube ultimately lead?

We began with the 2A3.

We explored the 300B.

We followed the development of the 6L6.

We traced the path toward the 6550 and KT88.

And then we followed another branch into television, where we encountered the 6DQ5, PL500, PL509 and PL519.

At the end of this long journey, we find something rather remarkable.

The same fundamental engineering goals continue to appear:

low internal resistance,

high transconductance,

strong electron emission,

high current capability,

and the ability to control large amounts of electron flow.

When a beam power tube is connected as a triode and used in parallel, its electrical behavior can once again approach the familiar territory of the 300B.

And the 300B, as discussed earlier in this series, can itself be understood as part of the extended lineage of the 2A3.

So perhaps we can say this:

The “gene” of the 2A3 survived through the 300B, through the development of beam power tubes such as the 6L6, 6550 and KT88, and ultimately into the powerful television output tubes that brought the classical vacuum-tube era to its final stage.

Of course, this is not biological inheritance.

These tubes do not share a literal genetic bloodline.

But when we look at the evolution of electrode structures, electron flow, current control, transconductance and power handling, it is difficult not to sense a certain continuity.

A kind of engineering gene survived.

And perhaps that is what I have really been searching for throughout the history of J-Album.

Not simply the names of thousands of vacuum tubes,

but the idea that continued to live inside them.

One Last Look

When I first started J-Album, KDK introduced me to a strange tube called the 13GB5.

At the time, I barely paid attention to it.

I was interested in the small 6LQ8.

Years later, while tracing the lineage of the 6CB5, I came back to that forgotten tube.

The 13GB5 turned out to be the American version of the European XL500, part of the EL500 / PL500 family.

And that family led me to the final generations of powerful beam tubes:

PL500 → PL504 → PL509 → PL519.

Looking back, it is almost poetic.

A tube that I once overlooked became one of the keys that helped me understand the final chapter of the vacuum-tube era.

The journey began with famous tubes such as the 2A3 and 300B.

It passed through the 6L6, 6550 and KT88.

It followed the powerful branches of the 6CB5 and 6DQ5.

It crossed the Atlantic and followed the European path of the PL500 series.

And finally, it reached the PL519, one of the last great high-current tubes of the classical era.

Perhaps this is where the long historical journey of the vacuum tube should end.

Not because every tube has been examined,

but because the main story has finally come full circle.

The vacuum tube began as a device for controlling electrons.

Over four decades, engineers pushed that simple idea further and further — toward higher power, higher current, higher frequency, greater efficiency and ever more sophisticated control of the electron beam.

And when the age of the transistor finally arrived, the vacuum tube had already carried that idea as far as its technology could take it.

The story ends here.

But the tubes themselves remain.

And now, instead of looking backward at their history,

we can finally begin to look inside them.

The history is over.

The experiments begin.
