From 6L6 to 6550 and KT88 — The 2A3 Gene That Never Disappeared

Beam

Perveance

Perveance

Perveance

A → B → C → D

A ──────── C
B ────────↗

From 6L6 to 6550 and KT88 — The 2A3 Gene That Never Disappeared

In my previous article, I looked at how the 6L6 came into being.

The 6L6 is often described simply as the first practical beam power tube.

But when we look more closely at its origins, the story becomes much more interesting.

The 6L6 did not suddenly appear out of nowhere.

It was the result of several different technological streams coming together:

RCA's accumulated experience in power-tube design,

the beam-power technology developed by MOV,

and the experience gained from earlier generations of high-power triodes.

These different technologies eventually came together in one tube.

So a natural question follows:

What happened after the 6L6?

As I followed this history, I came across something that I found particularly interesting.

The 6L6 did not really break away from the 2A3.

It simply took a different path.

And yet, over time, that path seems to have moved toward a destination surprisingly similar to the one the 2A3 had been pursuing.

This led me to look at vacuum-tube history from a slightly different perspective:

the history of technological genes.

The First Evolution of the 6L6

The 6L6 appeared in 1936 and continued to evolve through several generations.

6L6
→ 6L6G
→ 6L6GA
→ 6L6GB
→ 6L6GC

These were not merely changes in nomenclature.

The plate became larger.

The cathode became more capable.

The tube could handle greater current.

And its ability to dissipate heat increased.

The early metal 6L6 was rated at roughly 19 watts of plate dissipation, while the later 6L6GC reached approximately 30 watts.

But there is something particularly interesting about this evolution.

RCA retained the basic beam-power structure while continuously pushing the tube toward

a larger plate,
greater current capability,
and higher power.

In other words, the 6L6 retained the advantages of beam technology while gradually moving toward the territory that earlier high-power triodes had been pursuing.

I find this an important point.

Because the direction of this evolution would eventually bring the beam-power family surprisingly close to the world of the large triode.

Another Line of Evolution

But the evolution of the 6L6 did not proceed along a single path.

Another important branch appeared:

6L6 → 807

The 807 is well known as a transmitting tube with a top plate cap.

But essentially, it can be viewed as an extension of the 6L6 family.

And then something unexpected happened.

This family moved beyond the world of audio and entered the rapidly growing television industry.

The lineage included tubes such as:

807
→ 6BG6G
→ 6BQ6
→ 6CD6G
→ 6CB5

This general lineage can also be seen in the evolution of American horizontal-output, or line-output, tubes documented by Japanese tube researcher Koji Hayashi.

And this is where the story becomes especially interesting.

Because these tubes were no longer being developed primarily for high-quality audio reproduction.

TV Line-Output Tubes Took a Different Path

The priorities of a television line-output tube were very different from those of an audio output tube.

High-fidelity sound was not the goal.

What mattered was:

high peak power,
high current,
high reliability,

and the ability to operate effectively at high frequencies.

As a result, the technology evolved in a different direction.

The plates became larger.

The tubes handled more current.

Transconductance increased.

And perveance increased.

In other words, the technology was being pushed toward

more current and more power.

By the time we reach the 6CB5, this evolution becomes particularly striking.

The 6CB5 has roughly 23 watts of plate dissipation and is capable of handling currents in the neighborhood of 200 mA.

It is a high-perveance beam power tube.

At this point, the tube is already well beyond what we normally imagine when we think of a conventional audio output tube.

The television industry was pushing vacuum-tube technology in a completely different direction.

But Something About the 6CB5 Caught My Attention

When people think about the lineage of large beam power tubes, they often imagine something like:

6L6
→ 6550
→ KT88

But when we look more carefully at the history between these tubes, another tube appears:

6CB5.

Koji Hayashi places the 6CB5 in an important position leading toward the later high-power tubes such as the 6550 and KT88.

At first, I found this rather surprising.

How could a television line-output tube possibly be connected to some of the most important high-power audio tubes?

But when we temporarily forget the tube names and simply compare their characteristics, the connection becomes easier to understand.

The 6CB5 has:

high current capability,
a large plate,
high transconductance,
and high perveance.

The 6550 also has:

high current capability,
a large plate,
and high transconductance.

And the KT88 follows the same general direction.

Their applications were different.

Their intended operating conditions were different.

Their internal structures were different.

But the technological direction was remarkably similar.

This made me look at vacuum-tube evolution from another perspective.

Can the Evolution Be Explained by 6L6 Alone?

Here another question arises.

Can the enormous technological development leading to the 6CB5 really be explained entirely by the beam technology of the 6L6?

I am not completely convinced.

When the 6CB5 is compared with earlier tubes such as the 6BG6G and 6CD6G, the scale of the development is quite remarkable.

It almost gives me the feeling that

another technological DNA entered the evolutionary process somewhere along the way.

Of course, this is only a hypothesis at this stage.

I am not claiming that the designers of the 6CB5 directly copied technology from the 2A3.

I have no direct evidence for such a claim.

But it does raise an interesting possibility:

Could the philosophy of high current and high power associated with the 300B and 2A3 families have somehow been reflected in this later development?

Perhaps not as a direct line of inheritance.

But perhaps as a technological direction.

Different tube families can begin from completely different origins and yet gradually converge toward similar engineering goals.

The Direction the 2A3 Was Already Pursuing

To understand this possibility, we need to look again at the 2A3.

The 2A3 was designed around several characteristics that were fundamental to the high-power triode philosophy of its time:

a large plate,
high plate current,
and low plate resistance.

These characteristics represented an important direction in the development of high-power triodes.

Now look at the 6CB5, many years later.

We find another tube characterized by:

a large plate,
high current capability,
and a design moving toward low internal resistance and high current density.

Of course, the two tubes are fundamentally different.

One is an audio triode.

The other is a television line-output beam tube.

They were created for completely different purposes.

And yet they appear to be looking toward a surprisingly similar engineering destination.

I do not want to call this simply a coincidence.

Perhaps this is what a technological gene looks like.

So Where Did the 6550 and KT88 Come From?

I no longer feel comfortable describing the 6550 simply as

“a bigger 6L6.”

I think it is more interesting to look at it as the result of several technological streams coming together.

Perhaps something like this:

6L6 beam-power technology

high-current technology developed through television line-output tubes

the high-power philosophy pursued by earlier large triodes

came together to create a new class of high-power beam tubes.

One result was the

6550.

And another major development of this direction was the

KT88.

I would not describe this as a simple, straight-line genealogy.

But if we look at the evolution of technology rather than merely the names of the tubes, the connection becomes fascinating.

And perhaps this is part of what gives the 6550 and KT88 their special place in vacuum-tube history.

Technology Does Not Evolve in a Straight Line

There is one thing that struck me most strongly during this research.

We often describe technological history as:

A → B → C → D

But actual technological evolution is rarely that simple.

It may look more like this:

A ─────────→ C
B ────────↗

And somewhere else:

C + D + E
      ↓
      F

Technologies that appear unrelated may eventually come together and create something entirely new.

I would like to call this the

“Asteroid Belt Theory.”

Thousands of technological fragments drift through the vast space of history.

They move along different paths.

They sometimes disappear.

Sometimes they collide.

And occasionally, several of them come together and form something much larger.

A new planet is born.

The 6L6 Was One Such Planet

I think the 6L6 was one of those technological planets.

Once the 6L6 had emerged as a successful technology, its technological elements began to spread into different directions.

807

6BG6G

6BQ6

6CD6

6CB5

In the completely different environment of the television industry, these technologies continued to evolve.

Higher current was required.

Larger plates were needed.

Higher transconductance became desirable.

Higher perveance became important.

The technology continued to move toward higher current and greater power.

And eventually, some of these technological developments found their way back into the world of high-power audio.

One result was the

6550.

Another was the

KT88.

The asteroid belt had formed another planet.

So, Did the 2A3 Gene Disappear?

Now let us return to the question with which we began.

Was the 6L6 a competitor to the 2A3?

I no longer see it that way.

The 6L6 did not reject the 2A3.

It simply chose a different path.

The 2A3 pursued higher power through the large-triode approach, emphasizing high current, low plate resistance, and substantial power output.

The 6L6 chose another route:

beam-power technology.

But as time passed, the market demanded more power and greater current capability.

The 6L6 family responded by continuing to evolve.

Along the way, it entered the world of television.

The line-output tubes developed there pushed current and power capability even further.

And eventually, some of those technologies converged again with the world of audio.

The result included tubes such as

6550

and

KT88.

The Gene Never Disappeared

Perhaps the history of vacuum tubes is not really a history of tubes at all.

Perhaps it is a history of genes.

Tube names disappear.

Structures change.

Applications change.

An audio tube may inspire technology that later finds its way into television.

And technology developed for television may eventually return to the world of audio.

But the underlying engineering ideas do not necessarily disappear.

They can remain hidden within the technological landscape,

waiting to meet another idea,

and then emerge again in a completely different form.

So, did the 2A3 gene disappear?

My answer is:

No.

I suspect that it did not disappear.

It simply became scattered across different branches of technological evolution.

And sometimes, it reappeared in places where we would least expect to find it.

If we follow those traces, we can see a fascinating journey:

from the philosophy of the 2A3,
through the different path taken by the 6L6,
through the 807 and the television line-output tubes,
to the 6CB5,
and eventually toward the great high-power tubes such as the 6550 and KT88.

Perhaps studying vacuum tubes is not simply about studying the history of individual tubes.

Perhaps it is about tracing the movement of the invisible technological genes hidden inside them.

And that, to me, is one of the most fascinating ways to look at the history of vacuum tubes.

**The tubes may disappear.

But the genes remain.**
